I agree with R64: Pittsburgh's East End is where it's at. I like living in Pittsburgh more, though as I said, I've never lived in Phila. If you've never been to either, Philaelphia is a much larger city, with many more Manhattanesque shopping opportunities. Center City is a large geographical area, at least to walk, and it's advisable to walk as much as you can. At least a handful of them kick every Pittsburgh Italian restaurant's ass. I especially like going to Italian restaurants in Center City. The restaurants are better in Center City, by and large. It's one of the dog-friendliest neighborhoods I've ever been in, because Penn has a vet school, and few landlords don't allow pets. It's often referred to as the People's Republic of West Philadelphia. It's a nice, quiet area, west of Penn and north of Clark Park. Though I've never lived in Phila, I have friends who live in West Phila whom I've visited a lot. There might even be a yellow-brick house or two (not sure about white). It's a lovely neighborhood, as R62 and R64 suggest.
